Resort tips for seasonnaires

  1. Get a job before you arrive. Check www.natives.co.uk
  2. Get somewhere to stay before you arrive.
  3. If you intend to fly in to Geneva, before the season starts, try and get an early flight, otherwise you may be stranded in Chambery overnight due to a lack of trains.
  4. Look out for other potential seasonnaires on your flight and at the airport. You may be able to share transport. You can usually tell them by the fact they have enough luggage to last 6 months, and possibly a ski or board bag.
  5. Get a Vie Val d'Is card. It costs €15 and gives you free "carre neige" insurance, and 15% discount at loads of shops in Val d'Isere including all the supermarkets.
  6. If you don't have a job lined up, have your CV ready to go. E-mail it to your OWN e-mail address and print copies at Powdermonkey Internet, to ensure that you don't give a prospective employer a crumpled up, dog, eared CV!
  7. Season ski pass in WAYYYY cheaper if you are a worker with a contract. €370 instead of €900 (ish)
  8. Don't buy the cheapest beer -- it's horrible. spend the extra euro and buy 1664 or Heineken. Its WELL worth it for those apartment nights in.
  9. Skis and Boards are probably cheaper in resort. Precision Ski have offered a 25% discount to all workers in previous years. Let's hope they do it again this year !
  10. Bring a cheap DVD player or VCR or persuade your flatmate's to club in for one .. They start at about €40 in France. Order online at Powdermonkey. Just ask the staff to help you.
  11. English language DVD's and VHS cassettes are available from the Phillips shop, next to the Office de Tourisme.
  12. Get a seasonnaire card for DICKS. It costs €10 but you get 3 free drinks with that and guarantees you FREE entry every night for the whole season.
  13. If you don't have a good pair of boots, have a look on the boot stall at the Monday market. The have a great selection of Gore tex and waterproof leather boots for about €80. Yomping around Val d'Isere in a pair of Patrick Cox white suede loafers, with 2 feet of snow or 6 inches of slush on the ground is RIDICULOUS. And the grip on those leather soles is rubbish.
  14. Nearest McDonalds is Bourg St Maurice
  15. Best Burger in town is the Tocade - you will find it easy enough. 8am - 5am- that's right 21 hrs a day.
  16. Best Burger at the Tocade is the Bacon Cheese with a side of small fries- FACT.
  17. ALWAYS specify to the staff at Tocade well cooked "bien cuit pour les Anglais s'il t'plait" - failure to say this will mean that a decent vet would be able to bring it back to life. Patrice, the owner of Tocade has even included a new button on the order till for "bien cuit" Thanks Patrice !
  18. Eating out in Val d'Isere is usually expensive for seasonnaire wages. But! If you know where to go, or how to do it, it doesn't need to break the bank. Check this page.
  19. The supermarket in Tignes le Lac is open all day, serves ready made sandwiches and has a bakery section. Grab a picnic and eat it in the Tignes snow park.
  20. The X box BigDayOut is in March and Gumby always needs helpers. earn a few extra quid helping out.
  21. Buy a 20 litre winebox from Cash2000 - the "Wholesale" supermarket at the top of town. Good quality at knockdown prices - most of the restaurants use it !! And still cheaper than 20 bottles of "supermarket"
